Old photographs, dust in the hole
A distant voice, still here
I found an old photograph, Inside a drawer
I never opened
Different faces, different clothes, different dreams
Back then, we thought life would stay the same

People moved away
Some disappeared
Some became strangers
But certain things remained
The way my family left
The smell of home after rain

But somehow there was enough
Enough food, enough stories
Enough time to sit together
I didn't understand how valuable that was
Not then, time moves fast
Memories stay, some things never fade
Routes, they follow everywhere

I leave, they remind me where
I'm from
Rules, more than a place or a name
That the voices in my head, they taught me how to stand
I can build another life, cross another ocean, walk another road but
I'll always carry where
I came from now
I understand why older people repeat the same stories
They aren't trying to go backward, they're trying to keep something alive
A lesson, a voice, a moment that time can't recreate so
I stopped being embarrassed by where
I started
The hard years taught me patience
The simple years taught me gratitude
And the people who raised me gave me something money never could
A place inside myself that always feels like hope
